Sergeant First Class (SFC) John Cyran enlisted in the United States Army in July 2000 and was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. During his tenure with the 82nd Airborne Division, he served as an Infantry Team Leader, 60mm Mortar Gunner, and Squad Leader. He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom I, where he led a mortar squad in offensive and defensive operations supporting two Special Forces safe houses and participated in 29 company- and battalion-level air assault missions, including Operation Mountain Sweep.

Following his initial deployment, SFC Cyran was assigned to 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, at Fort Carson, Colorado. Voluntarily waiving his dwell time, he joined the regiment for its deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom I. Serving as a Team Leader and Section Sergeant, his leadership contributed directly to the unit's success during Operation Bayonet Lightning and Operation Ivy Cyclone in Hawija, Iraq, within the Triangle of Death.

SFC Cyran subsequently served with the Army's first Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, the 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Assigned to F Company, 51st Long Range Surveillance Company, and later 525th Headquarters and Headquarters Company, he served primarily as the Brigade Commander's and Brigade Command Sergeant Major's Personal Security Detachment Platoon Sergeant. During a 16-month deployment to Iraq in support of the Surge, SFC Cyran conducted 252 combat patrols. His leadership was instrumental during Operation Defeat Al Qaeda in the North, where he led HUMINT and SIGINT operations in support of combat operations.

SFC Cyran was then assigned to 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. He served as a Weapons Squad Leader and Platoon Sergeant for 11 months during the Surge in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Selected by the Battalion Commander, he subsequently conducted combat operations alongside 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, and other Special Operations Forces elements to identify and incorporate tactics, techniques, and procedures necessary to maintain the unit's combat lethality for the upcoming fighting season. As a Patrol Leader, SFC Cyran led 257 mounted and dismounted combat patrols in pursuit of Taliban fighters.

Following his operational assignments, SFC Cyran was selected to serve as the Presidential Escort Platoon Sergeant with The Old Guard in Arlington, Virginia. In this distinguished position, he was responsible for ensuring the successful execution of 75 high-profile missions, including eight Full Honor Wreath Ceremonies at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

SFC Cyran was medically retired from the United States Army following injuries sustained during 39 months of combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. His military service is distinguished by extensive combat experience, sustained leadership at the small-unit level, and service in conventional, airborne, surveillance, and special operations environments.
